Plastic is the most versatile product in the world. It is cheap, needs low-maintenence and is long-lasting. Thus, making it very popular around the world. We use plastic for everyday needs like packaging, carrying our grocery, etc. It is a wonder product! But, however, not all things are gold. Same goes for plastic.

Plastic causes more harm than good. It causes harm to our seas and oceans, land and animals. It is said that about 5 trillion micro-plastics end up in our oceans. Sea animals get trapped in this maze of plastic. Many a times, they end up eating it, thinking of it as food. Plastic has entered our food-chain as well, through seafood. It is very depressing to see pictures of marine animals with their cut-open stomachs, overflowing with plastic.

Plastics, buried in land, release toxic chemicals in the soil and thus, poisoning the organisms living in there. These chemicals pollute our groundwater in this way. Burning plastic release toxic gases in the atmosphere, becoming a leading cause to air pollution. Animals, especially in South-Asia, end up the plastic lying on the roads and grounds. Hence, they die due to suffocation. Plastic also forms a lining in their stomachs. This has become a major problem.

All we can do is changing the mindset of people regarding plastics. We can urge them to reduce the use of plastic and also reuse them. School children can be taught the hazards of plastics through school projects. Governments should also work towards executing laws on plastics. It will take some time but things will surely change.
